Doans catered my daughters' high school graduation this weekend. Anita was lovely to work with, the prices were fair, and the food was very good. Very healthy portions. I was most impressed with the brisket, as decent brisket is hard to get this far northeast, and this was decent. As well, they made us a tossed salad for 30 that was full off stuff rather than the standard, poorly cleaned iceberg we've gotten elsewhere.

We also had the pulled pork which was excellent, and the chicken. My only suggestion for catering orders would be more sauce. I'll be using Dones for my other daughters' graduation next year and I recommend them highly.

The food deserves 4 stars but the service deserves 0 stars. We ordered the chicken, brisket, and the pulled pork nachos. Everything was decent, except the brisket. The brisket sandwich was not good. Also, the service is terrible. We had to go to the kitchen to get our own cutlery. They asked what flavor of ice cream we ordered like 3-4 times. On top of that, they made us queue with the people ordering to pay our bill, which took forever.

I waited in line for 30 minutes just to give my order. The staff would disappear for 10 minutes after taking an order. I tried the baby backed ribs. The menu says the meat quote: "falls of the bone". The meat in fact did not fall off the bone; it was obviously not fresh or cooked right. I also tried the mac and cheese and beans. The mac and cheese was bland and overcooked it was literally soup.

The beans tasted like they were canned and from trying my friends food everything else was either mid or bad. To add insult to injury, there is a sign in the entrance that reads "best bbq you've tried" or something along those lines. The only thing that was good was the ice cream.

For PA barbecue, this is a great spot. I'm from South Carolina though, and compared to real Carolina BBQ, Doan's pales in comparison. They have some typical sides as well as various BBQ types on the menu. The barbecue was good, probably the best around (though I haven't really tried many places- this is the only one I know of) so if you have a hankerin' for bbq, I do recommend this place!

I was disappointed in the types of sides they have as well as the portions of said sides. when you say I get Cole slaw with my sandwich, I'm expecting a little more than a tiny snack cup. The outdoor seating area is nice when the weather's nice, and the indoor space looked fine for non-Covid times. I don't think they're really encouraging lots of sitting and dining inside but it's still open for that with social distancing setups. Overall not a bad place, but it just wasn't what I'd hoped for (but my standards are maybe too high, so take what I said with a grain of salt).

I am generally pretty biased and picky about BBQ since I am from South Carolina, but this place comes close to the mark, especially for Pennsylvania! I got the brisket and my wife got the pulled pork sandwich, both of which were good, but the brisket definitely takes the award between them. We were here during COVID times, so we sat outside, which was actually really lovely on a pleasant fall day.

I also got mac n cheese and fries as sides: the fries are similar to McDonalds in style, and the mac n cheese is velveta based. Both good! Staff was super nice and accommodating, which I had heard before from around town. Although it is a bit of a drive from State College, the distance has its benefits, such as no undergrads and you can take your BBQ to go and enjoy it at Whipple Dam!

Ate at Doan's last night with my family. Overall great food at an ok price. The brisket sandwiches were tasty and the fries were great. The kids loved the orange aid drinks. Service was a little slow, but folks were friendly. Their smoky smell permeates the parking lot, which is nice. Will go back.

I'm gonna give this place a 3 star only because I'm a local! This place has gone down from a 5+ rating to actually a 1 if I was just passing through! I visited here last fall and there were 0 things I could say that went wrong! Service was good, the food was absolutely amazing (even after driving for 30 min to get home first to eat it)! What the fuck happened?

I understand that these are some unprecedented times but serving sub par food just because you are struggling to stay open is not acceptable! First, I got mislead by the counter clerk into buying 2 sides that I didn't really want, which is you know? Whatever, but don't tell your guests it comes with 2 sides and then charge them 3$ extra. Second, their coleslaw is disgusting., fries are supposed to be home made but honestly it seems like they got the lost fry delivery boxes off of a McDonald's truck! Third, I spent 30$ for what? Shitty fries? A pulled pork sandwich made on a hot dog bun? Or the misleading service I got from the clerk?

This place has amazing briskets! Always tasty, always fulfilling, definitely a must go if you are a meat person! The nachos is strongly recommended. Enjoy their appetizers as well, the fried pickles are great! They put out tables and chairs in the summer time to enjoy the sun! A gem!

The service is a bit slow. The servers are polite. The wings are exceptional, well cooked with their own spicy sauce. Try the burnt bones sauce it is very hot and it has an amazing aroma. The ribs are a great choice. Correctly smoked, with the right amount of bbq sauce they are mouth watering. The restaurant is well worth the drive. Interestingly, the quality of the meals has been getting better with every visit. I usually visit at late noon. One of the best restaurants in the area.

We stopped for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon in June. We ordered the pulled pork meal, half a rack of ribs, fresh lemonade, and a scoop of chocolate ice cream. We enjoyed our meal. The ribs were a little dry but I loved the sauce. The french fries were very good. They have high chairs and nice clean bathroom. Our server was very friendly and helpful with the little guy. Toddlers can be difficult in restaurants. Overall, I would eat here again and I would recommend it.

This is my second visit here and it won't be my last unless I move out of Pennsylvania. The location is clean and the service was excellent. We ordered the Nachos Doanos and they were amazing! For my meal I ordered a 1/2 rack of ribs. The ribs were tasty but they were a little too dry for my liking, the outside was tough but I still enjoyed them. We also had a burger and Mac and cheese and beans. Before leaving I had some ice cream, I got the flavor Camo Hero and it hit the spot! I will definitely be back.

It is a quiet and comfortable place with a great selection of BBQ. I've tried 6 ounces of brisket with mac&cheese and fries on the side and it was great!

This place was quite a surprise and a gem! Great food unusual atmosphere but very nice had the, "doans" something plate. It was barbeque backed beans on a plate if fries excellent! Not just another pulled pork place.

Lived in the area for 10 years, been to this place twice. Second chance was worse than the first time. Meh food, horrible service. Owner is a bag of attitude. They screw up your order and if you call them out on it, they don't apologize, they just give you sas. Also, don't bother using their online ordering service. It doesn't work and they could care less. Take out food without cutlery or napkins. Zero customer service. Skip it. You'll most likely make better BBQ at home.

Great spot for a group meal outside of downtown State College. Have met friends here on multiple occasions. This is definitely off the beaten path, and there's a solid chance you'll be the only one in there. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some barbecue.

Omg where should I start.they need basic 101 in customer service skills. 1. Hello how may I help you. 2. Don't roll your eyes while walking over to take an order 3. Act like you appreciate the business **Those are the three basic customer service skills you need that require common sense and common courtesy. Every part of the experience made me cringe

I wish I liked this place more than I do because I love hanging out at Whipple Dam and then stopping here. We had ribs and fries. The fries are pretty tasty! The ribs were okay but on the dry side and I found the sauce to be a bit "ketchup-y" - not my favorite.

I liked the restaurant as a destination when I am in State College and want them to do well. Wanting, however, will not save the brisket I was served last Saturday. It was tough (really tough) and dry and uniformly colored -- no change from bark to inside meat. I don't plan to return but if I do, I won't try the brisket again. I understand that brisket can be difficult to do properly -- if you can't or if the cook went bad, just say that you are out. Serving bad brisket is much worse than being out of brisket.

First time ordering, very slow service, overpriced, disorganized and they gave us the wrong order. We dIdnt notice until we got home, the food was horrible, mac and cheese was over cooked and mushy. Everything else was dried out and tasteless. When I called to complain and told her how disappointed I was she offered two free meals that we never received because we decided getting a free meal wasn't worth the effort.

Within minutes of arriving we realized how unorganized the place was. It took forever for them to take our order for take out. In all the whole experience took about an hour start to finish. Again, for take out. The food was underwhelming at best.

Normally I would rave about this place. HOWEVER, yesterday I picked up BBQ to take home for dinner at about 4:30pm. When I got home and opened up the order, it was for the most part charcoal. The ribs were so over cooked they were hard and black-just like charcoal; the half chicken had black skin and was very dry. The brisket was not over done, but was very tough and hard to chew.

The only saving grace was the pulled pork. I spent over $45 on take out and my son and I had dreams of left overs the next day. Not happening! The part that really bothers me is that it was quite obvious the food was way way over done and the lady still gave it to us. Not sure I will ever go back. It is a shame.

Nice lunch of pulled pork and Cheddar on a steak roll. Home made potato chips were OK but would have been great if served warm. My dining partner had a 1/4 rack of BBQ ribs with a side substitute of tasty mac & cheese. No ABC license, but convenient to the nearby Whipple Dam state park. They also have soft serve ice cream with all the treatments. Pizza starts in the afternoon in their wood fired oven.

You had me at FRIED PICKLES. We stopped here for a bite, the smell from the smokehouse was intoxicating and drew us in. I got the ribs, he got the pulled pork. My ribs were a bit dry, I wonder if they knew this and maybe this is why they were inclined to drown them in bbq sauce, not fantastic, but not terrible (Warning my standards for BBQ are extremely high as I am a native Kansas Citian and I don't have to tell you what we are known for) My beau's pulled pork was alright, but then again he is not from Kansas City so what does he know about BBQ? (Just kidding!) The fried pickles were ok too- large spears rather than my preferred slices, which made them a little less appealing and the flavor a bit overwhelming.

Their ranch dressing wasn't the best either, and I take my ranch and bbq sauce very seriously. The pricing was a bit higher than we expected too. Overall- it's all OK in the corral, but we will be moovin' on to greener pastures.

Excellent BBQ and fixings. Beans are a pleasant mix of several beans including Lima and Kidney. Cole slaw is awesome. Ribs are nicely done and fall off the bone. Nice friendly staff. Simple country setting. BYOB. Cell phones don't work in this location, which is a blessing. Makes for good dinner conversation with friends and family. If you are in the need of delicious smoked meat, this IS the place to be!
